FLASHFlux Processing Metadata

This supplemental data is provided to show where there may be missing inputs to the FLASHFlux TISA or SSF products which can result in odd looking data or gaps in the data. Special circumstances which explain missing data will be noted in these metadata files.

FLASHFlux processing is evaluated on a weekly basis, where the most recently completed Monday through Sunday of processing comprises the week. These reports start by checking the TISA Log files for the TISA processing inputs. Metadata on other inputs is gathered by checking for the presence of files in the ASDC archive.

First, the TISA inputs are accounted for. Each TISA daily average uses 3 days of input files, the current day plus the previous and following days. Three days of MOA plus the first file of the fourth day are required, 13 in all. Three days of Terra and Aqua SFC-HR files (an intermediate product from the tisa_grid processing), 144 in all, are ideal, but TISA will run without all 144.

Second, the tisa_grid program inputs are SSF files from the inversion, one for each SFC-HR file, so a missing SFC-HR file is probably due to a missing SSF file. A missing SSF file can also result in the SFC-HR file for the hour before and/or after being missing, too. Sometimes hour 00 of SFC-HR is missing due to hour 23 of SSF of the previous day being unavailable.

Third, missing SSF files are usually due to missing instrument data input which are the IES files, so the IES files are checked. A missing IES file can also result in the SSF file for the hour before and/or after being missing, too.

Fourth, if the IES files are not missing, the next thing checked are the MODIS inputs to clouds. There must be at least one matched pair of the 5 minute interval files of MOD02 and MOD03 (for Terra) or the 5 minute interval files of MYD02 and MYD03 (for Aqua) for the clouds subsystem to run the hour and produce output for that hour for input to the inversion. If there are adequate MODIS inputs for clouds to run an hour, but it hasn't run for other reasons, then the clouds output and therefore the SSF and SFC-HR files for that hour will be missing.
